What ToolsEssential is

ToolsEssential is a collection of free online tools for the small, everyday jobs that eat up time: making a photo small enough for an upload form, joining several PDFs into one file, checking a word count, working out a percentage or a loan payment. Each tool does one job, explains how it works, and gets out of your way.

How our tools work

Almost every tool on this site runs entirely inside your web browser using standard technologies such as JavaScript, the HTML Canvas and the File API. When you choose a file, it is read by your own device and the result is created on your own device. The file is not uploaded to our servers, which means it cannot be stored, viewed or leaked by us.

This approach also makes the tools fast. There is no upload to wait for and no queue on a busy server, and there are no artificial file-size limits beyond what your device can handle.

Our principles

• Free to use. Every tool is free with no sign-up and no daily limit. The site is funded by advertising.
• Privacy first. We do not ask for your name or email to use a tool, and we do not see the files you process.
• Accuracy you can check. Calculators show the formula they use, and each guide explains the settings, so you can verify a result yourself.
• Works everywhere. Pages are lightweight and designed for phones first, so they load quickly even on slow connections.
