How to pick a color from an image

  1. Add an image — drop it on the box, choose a file, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V.
  2. Move over the image; a magnifier shows the exact pixels under your cursor.
  3. Click to pick a color. Its HEX, RGB and HSL codes appear on the right — click any of them to copy.
  4. Below, the palette shows the image’s dominant colors and how much of the image each one covers.

How the automatic palette works

The tool samples thousands of pixels from your image and groups similar colors together with the k-means clustering algorithm. Each group’s average becomes one palette color, sorted from most to least common. Change the number of colors to get a broader or more detailed palette.

Uses

  • Match a brand: get the exact colors from a client’s logo when you only have a JPG or screenshot.
  • Design inspiration: turn a favorite photo into a website or presentation color scheme.
  • Interior and fashion: find paint or fabric colors that match a picture.
  • Development: grab colors from a design mock-up for your CSS.

HEX, RGB and HSL

HEX (like #2747D6) is the standard for web and design tools. RGB describes the red, green and blue light levels from 0 to 255. HSL (hue, saturation, lightness) is the easiest to adjust by hand — change only the lightness to make lighter or darker shades of the same color.

A note on accuracy

Photos contain noise, shadows and compression artifacts, so neighboring pixels can differ slightly. Use the magnifier to aim at the center of a flat area, or rely on the palette, which averages many pixels. Next, build a full scheme with the color palette generator or test text readability with the contrast checker.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the HEX code of a color in an image?

Upload the image here and click on the color. The HEX code appears instantly and can be copied with one click.

Can I pick colors from my screen?

In Chrome and Edge, use “Pick from anywhere on screen” to sample colors outside the browser window.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is read in your browser and never leaves your device.

Why do nearby pixels have slightly different colors?

Photos contain noise and compression. Use the palette for averaged, cleaner colors.
