How to use the meta tag generator
- Write a page title and meta description. The bars turn green when the length is in the ideal range and red when it is likely to be cut off.
- Add the canonical URL (the preferred address of the page), a share image and your site name.
- Choose the robots setting — leave it on “index, follow” for normal pages.
- Copy the generated code and paste it inside the
<head>section of your page. In WordPress, plugins such as Yoast SEO or Rank Math manage these tags for you — use the title and description you crafted here in their fields.
Which meta tags matter for SEO?
| Tag | Purpose | Importance |
|---|---|---|
<title> | The clickable headline in search results and the browser tab | Essential — a confirmed ranking factor |
| meta description | The summary under the title in results | Not a ranking factor, but strongly affects click-through rate |
| canonical | Tells search engines which URL is the main version | Important to avoid duplicate-content issues |
| robots | Controls indexing and link following | Use only when you need to block a page |
| viewport | Makes the page display properly on phones | Essential for mobile-first indexing |
| Open Graph / Twitter | Title, description and image for social sharing | Important for Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and X |
| meta keywords | A list of keywords | Ignored by Google since 2009 — not generated here |
Writing a great title
- Put the main keyword near the start.
- Keep it around 50–60 characters. Google truncates titles by pixel width (about 600 px), so wide letters like “W” use more space.
- Make every page’s title unique.
- Add your brand at the end if there is room, separated by a dash or pipe.
Writing a meta description that gets clicks
- Summarise the page in 120–158 characters, matching what the searcher wants.
- Include the keyword naturally — Google bolds words that match the search.
- Add a benefit or call to action: “Free”, “No sign-up”, “Step-by-step guide”.
- Google sometimes rewrites descriptions using text from the page; a relevant, specific description makes this less likely.
To test titles and descriptions for several pages quickly, use the SERP Snippet Preview. For richer social cards, see the Open Graph Generator.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I put meta tags?
Inside the <head> section of your HTML, before </head>. In WordPress, use an SEO plugin’s title and description fields instead of editing the theme.
How long should a meta description be?
About 120–158 characters on desktop. Google may show less on mobile and sometimes rewrites descriptions.
Do meta keywords help SEO?
No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag for more than a decade, so this generator does not include it.
What is a canonical tag?
It tells search engines the preferred URL for a page when the same content is reachable at several addresses, consolidating ranking signals to one URL.
