How to make a GIF from a video

  1. Choose a video file. It appears in the player.
  2. Play or scrub to the moment you want and press Use current video position as start — or type a start time.
  3. Set the length (up to 15 seconds), width and frame rate.
  4. Press Create GIF, check the preview and download it.

Keeping GIF files small

GIF is an old format with only 256 colours per frame and no modern compression, so GIFs are much larger than the video they came from. File size grows with width × height × frames. To keep a GIF under the limits of email, chat apps or websites:

  • Keep it short — 2–5 seconds is ideal for reactions and demos.
  • Use a smaller width — 360 or 480 px is plenty for most uses.
  • Lower the frame rate — 10 fps looks smooth enough for most clips.
  • Choose simple scenes — fewer moving details compress better.

Where GIFs are useful

  • Product demos and how-to steps in documentation or emails (most email clients play GIFs but not video).
  • Reactions and memes for chats and social media.
  • Showing a bug or a feature in a support ticket.

GIF or video?

For anything longer than a few seconds or with lots of colour, a short MP4 or WebM video is usually 5–10 times smaller and looks better. Use GIF where video isn’t supported — email newsletters, some forums and documentation tools. To record your screen first, use the Screen Recorder.

Frequently asked questions

How long can my GIF be?

Up to 15 seconds in this tool. Shorter GIFs are much smaller and load faster.

Why is my GIF so large?

GIF compression is inefficient. Reduce the width, length or frame rate to make it smaller.

Is there a watermark?

No. Your GIF contains only your video frames.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Frames are captured and encoded in your browser.
