How to use the GPA calculator
- Choose your grading scale. The US 4.0 scale is used by most American colleges; the Bangladesh UGC scale is used by public and private universities in Bangladesh.
- For each course, select the letter grade you received (or expect) and enter its credit hours. Course names are optional.
- Your semester GPA updates instantly.
- To find your new cumulative GPA (CGPA), enter your previous CGPA and the number of credits you had completed before this semester.
How GPA is calculated
GPA is a weighted average: each grade is weighted by the credit hours of the course, so a 4-credit course affects your GPA more than a 1-credit lab.
GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
Example: A (4.0) in a 3-credit course, B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course and A− (3.7) in a 2-credit course:
(4.0×3 + 3.3×4 + 3.7×2) ÷ (3+4+2) = (12 + 13.2 + 7.4) ÷ 9 = 3.62
Cumulative GPA
New CGPA = (Old CGPA × old credits + semester points) ÷ (old credits + semester credits)
Grading scales
| US letter | Points | Bangladesh UGC | Marks | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A / A+ | 4.0 | A+ | 80–100 | 4.00 |
| A− | 3.7 | A | 75–79 | 3.75 |
| B+ | 3.3 | A− | 70–74 | 3.50 |
| B | 3.0 | B+ | 65–69 | 3.25 |
| B− | 2.7 | B | 60–64 | 3.00 |
| C+ | 2.3 | B− | 55–59 | 2.75 |
| C | 2.0 | C+ | 50–54 | 2.50 |
| C− | 1.7 | C | 45–49 | 2.25 |
| D+ / D | 1.3 / 1.0 | D | 40–44 | 2.00 |
| F | 0.0 | F | Below 40 | 0.00 |
Some institutions use slightly different point values (for example A+ = 4.3, or no minus grades). Always check your university’s official grading policy, especially for scholarships or transcripts.
Tips for raising your GPA
- Focus on high-credit courses. Improving one grade in a 4-credit course moves your GPA more than in a 1-credit course.
- Use the calculator to plan. Enter the grades you expect to find out what you need in your remaining courses to reach a target.
- Know the retake policy. Many universities replace or average a failed grade when a course is retaken.
- The further you are into your degree, the harder it is to move your CGPA, so early semesters matter.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA usually means the average for one semester. CGPA (cumulative GPA) is the average across all semesters completed so far, weighted by credits.
Do pass/fail courses count?
Usually not. Courses graded pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory are normally excluded from GPA. Leave them out of the calculator.
How do I convert a percentage to GPA?
It depends on your institution’s scale. On the Bangladesh UGC scale, 80% and above is A+ (4.00), 75–79% is A (3.75) and so on — see the table above.
Is a 3.5 GPA good?
A 3.5 on a 4.0 scale is generally considered strong (roughly an A−/B+ average) and meets the requirement for many scholarships and graduate programmes.
