How sleep cycles work

Sleep moves through repeating cycles of light sleep, deep sleep and REM (dreaming) sleep. Each cycle lasts roughly 90 minutes (typically 80–110). Waking up at the end of a cycle, during light sleep, tends to feel easier than being jolted out of deep sleep — which can leave you groggy, a feeling called sleep inertia.

This calculator counts back (or forward) in 90-minute steps and adds the time it takes you to fall asleep — about 15 minutes for most people.

How much sleep do you need?

AgeRecommended sleep per night
Teens (13–18)8–10 hours
Adults (18–60)7 or more hours
Adults (61–64)7–9 hours
65+7–8 hours

Based on recommendations from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the CDC.

For most adults, five cycles (7.5 hours) or six cycles (9 hours) fits these guidelines. Four cycles (6 hours) is fine occasionally, but regularly sleeping less than 7 hours is linked with poorer focus, mood and long-term health.

Tips for better sleep

  • Keep the same bedtime and wake-up time every day, including weekends.
  • Get daylight in the morning and dim screens and lights in the hour before bed.
  • Avoid caffeine in the afternoon and heavy meals or alcohol close to bedtime.
  • Keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet.

Cycle timing is a guide — individual cycles vary. If you regularly feel unrested after enough sleep, snore loudly or wake up gasping, talk to a doctor about a possible sleep disorder.
