How to calculate a tip
Multiply the bill (before tax, if you prefer) by the tip percentage. For a 20% tip on $80, that’s $80 × 0.20 = $16. Quick mental math: move the decimal one place left to get 10% ($8.00), then double it for 20% ($16) or add half again for 15% ($12).

Customs differ abroad. In the UK and Australia, 10–12.5% is common in restaurants (check whether a service charge is already included), and in much of Europe rounding up or 5–10% is normal. In Japan, tipping is generally not expected.
Should you tip before or after tax?
Etiquette guides traditionally say to tip on the pre-tax amount, since tax isn’t part of the service. Many people simply tip on the total for simplicity — the difference is usually small. Tick or untick the option to see both.
Splitting the bill
Enter the number of people to divide the total, including tip, evenly. Turn on round up to make each share a whole dollar amount — the extra cents go to the tip. If people ordered very differently, it’s fairer to total each person’s items and use the tip percentage on each share; the percentage calculator can help.
