Rates are daily mid-market reference rates from ExchangeRate-API, updated once a day. The time of the last update is shown under the converter.
Why your bank gives a different rate
The rate shown here is the mid-market rate — halfway between the buying and selling rates on wholesale currency markets. Banks, money changers, card networks and remittance services add a margin (spread) and sometimes a fixed fee. That is why the rate you actually receive is usually a little worse. To compare services, check the final amount the recipient receives after all fees.
Getting the best exchange rate
- The rates shown are mid-market reference rates — the midpoint between buying and selling prices that banks use with each other.
- Banks, card networks and airport kiosks add a margin of 1–5% (sometimes more) on top of this rate. Compare the rate you are offered with the reference rate here to see the real cost.
- When paying by card abroad, choose to pay in the local currency; “dynamic currency conversion” at the till usually uses a worse rate.
- Money transfer services often beat bank rates for sending money abroad — compare the total amount received, not just the fee.
Tips for international payments
- Freelancers and exporters: compare payout services (bank wire, Payoneer, Wise and others) on the total received, not just the headline rate.
- Online shopping: when a card terminal or website offers to charge you in your home currency (“dynamic currency conversion”), choose the local currency instead — the merchant’s conversion is usually worse.
- Importers: currency movements change your landed cost. Re-check margins with the Landed Cost Calculator when rates move.
