How to convert CSV to JSON
- Paste your CSV data, or click Open file to load a
.csvexported from Excel or Google Sheets. - The delimiter is detected automatically — commas, semicolons (common in Europe), tabs or pipes.
- With first row is a header on, each row becomes an object using the column names as keys. Turn it off to get an array of arrays.
- Copy or download the JSON.
Example
The CSV row Alice Smith,[email protected],34,true with headers name, email, age, active becomes:
{ "name": "Alice Smith", "email": "[email protected]", "age": 34, "active": true }
With detect numbers & booleans on, 34 becomes a number and true a boolean. Turn it off to keep every value as text — useful for ZIP codes or phone numbers with leading zeros.
Converting JSON to CSV
Switch to JSON → CSV and paste an array of objects. The columns are taken from all keys found in the objects; nested objects are written as JSON text. Values containing commas, quotes or line breaks are quoted correctly, so the file opens cleanly in Excel or Google Sheets.
CSV tips
- Fields containing the delimiter must be wrapped in double quotes:
"Lee, Kim". A quote inside a quoted field is written twice:"". - Excel in some regions saves “CSV” with semicolons — auto-detect handles this.
- Clean up messy lists first with remove duplicate lines, and pretty-print or validate the output with the JSON formatter.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an Excel file to JSON?
In Excel or Google Sheets, save or download the sheet as CSV, then open it here.

Yes. Quoted fields like "Lee, Kim" are parsed correctly, including escaped quotes.
Can I keep leading zeros?
Yes — turn off “Detect numbers & booleans” so every value stays as text.
Is there a size limit?
No fixed limit. Files of several megabytes convert quickly because everything runs in your browser.
