How to find and replace text
- Paste your text into the first box.
- Enter what to find and what to replace it with. Add more rows to make several replacements in one go — they are applied from top to bottom.
- Choose the matching options. The result and the number of replacements update instantly.
- Copy the result, or press Use result as new text to make further changes.
Matching options explained
- Case-sensitive: “Shop” and “shop” are treated as different. Leave it off to match regardless of capitals.
- Whole words only: “shop” will not match inside “shopping” or “workshop”. This prevents accidental partial replacements — the most common find-and-replace mistake.
- Preserve capitalisation: when replacing “shop” with “store”, “Shop” becomes “Store” and “SHOP” becomes “STORE” automatically.
- Regular expressions: use patterns such as
\d+(any number) orcolou?r(colour or color). Use$1in the replacement to insert captured groups. Test complex patterns in our Regex Tester.
Practical uses
- Rebranding: change an old company or product name across a long document.
- Templates: fill placeholders like
{name}and{date}in letters and messages. - Spelling standards: switch between British and American spelling (colour → color, organise → organize).
- Data clean-up: replace semicolons with commas, swap date formats with regex, or remove unwanted words by replacing them with nothing.
- Translation preparation: standardise terminology before sending text for translation.
Several replacements at once
Rows are applied in order, and each row works on the result of the one above it. This matters when replacements overlap: if row 1 changes “cat” to “dog” and row 2 changes “dog” to “bird”, every original “cat” ends up as “bird”. Reorder or adjust rows if that is not what you want.
