How to make a meme

  1. Add a picture — drop any image on the box, or choose a blank square, portrait, wide or story background.
  2. Type your captions. The top and bottom text boxes are ready to edit; add more with + Add text.
  3. Style the text with the size slider, text color and outline color. Untick ABC for lowercase.
  4. Drag the text anywhere on the image, then download your meme as PNG or JPG.

The classic meme look

The traditional meme style uses a tall, condensed, all-caps typeface in white with a thick black outline, so the words stay readable on top of any photo — bright or dark. This generator uses Anton, an open-source font with the same bold, condensed feel as Impact, and draws a rounded outline that scales with the text size. Long captions wrap automatically to fit the width of the image.

Tips for memes that get shared

  • Keep it short. The best captions are a setup on top and a punchline at the bottom, a few words each.
  • Use a clear, high-contrast image. Faces and obvious emotions work best.
  • Mind the safe zone. Social apps crop the edges of previews — keep text away from the very edge.
  • Pick the right shape: square or 4:5 for Instagram and Facebook feeds, 9:16 for Stories, Reels and TikTok, 16:9 for X and YouTube.

Use your own images responsibly

Memes are a form of commentary and parody, but photos, film stills and artwork are usually protected by copyright, and real people have rights over how their image is used. Use photos you took yourself or images you have permission to use, avoid putting real people in misleading or hurtful situations, and don’t use memes of other people’s content to sell products.
