How to extract text from an image

  1. Choose an image, drop it on the box, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac).
  2. Pick the language of the text: English, Bangla, or both for mixed documents.
  3. Recognition starts automatically. The first time, the language data (about 2 MB for English, 0.5 MB for Bangla) is downloaded and then cached by your browser.
  4. Edit the result if needed, then copy it or download it as a text file.

What is OCR?

Optical character recognition (OCR) turns pictures of text — scans, photos, screenshots — into real, editable text. This tool uses Tesseract, a widely used open-source OCR engine originally developed by HP and later maintained by Google, compiled to run directly in your browser.

Getting the best accuracy

  • Sharp, well-lit images work best. Avoid shadows, glare and blur.
  • Straight and flat: photograph pages from directly above. Crop away the background with the Image Cropper.
  • Enough resolution: text should be at least 20–30 pixels tall in the image. Screenshots of normal-size text are usually fine.
  • Printed text is recognised far better than handwriting, which OCR handles poorly.
  • Choose the right language. For pages mixing Bangla and English, choose “English + Bangla”.

Bangla OCR

Bangla text is recognised with Tesseract’s trained Bengali model. It handles clear printed text — books, newspapers, official documents and screenshots — reasonably well. Complex conjuncts (যুক্তাক্ষর), decorative fonts and low-quality scans reduce accuracy, so always proofread the result.

Common uses

  • Copy text from a screenshot or a photo of a notice.
  • Digitise printed documents, receipts and business cards.
  • Extract quotes from book pages for study notes.
  • Make scanned PDFs searchable: convert pages with PDF to JPG, then run OCR here.

Frequently asked questions

Does it support Bangla?

Yes. Choose “Bangla” or “English + Bangla”. Accuracy is best on clear printed text.

Can it read handwriting?

Only poorly. Tesseract is designed for printed text; neat block capitals give the best chance.

Why is the first run slow?

The OCR engine and language data are downloaded the first time (a few MB) and cached for next time.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Recognition runs in your browser; only the OCR engine files are downloaded from this site.
