How to convert JPG to PNG
- Drop your JPG or JPEG files onto the box, or click to choose them. WebP, BMP and GIF images work too.
- Press Process images. Each image is converted to PNG at its original width and height.
- Download the PNG files one by one, or all together as a ZIP.
JPG vs. PNG: what’s the difference?
| JPG / JPEG | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy — discards some detail to make files small | Lossless — every pixel kept exactly |
| Transparency | Not supported | Supported (alpha channel) |
| Typical file size for a photo | Small | Large (often 3–10× bigger) |
| Best for | Photographs | Logos, screenshots, graphics, text, images you will edit again |
When converting to PNG makes sense
- You will keep editing the image. Each time a JPG is edited and saved again, it loses a little more quality. Converting to PNG first stops that “generation loss”.
- A website or app requires PNG. Some upload forms, design tools and print services only accept PNG.
- Screenshots and graphics with text. PNG keeps edges and lettering crisp.
- You plan to add transparency. Converting to PNG lets you later remove the background in an image editor.
What converting does not do
Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore detail that JPG compression already removed — the PNG will look exactly like the JPG, just stored losslessly. It also does not make the background transparent by itself; a JPG has no transparency information to carry over. And because PNG is lossless, the file will usually be larger than the original JPG. If you need a small file for sharing, keep the JPG or use our Image Compressor.
Private conversion
The conversion is performed by your browser’s built-in image engine. Your photos are never uploaded, so you can convert personal or confidential images safely, even on a slow connection.
Frequently asked questions
Will converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. The PNG will look the same as the JPG. PNG prevents further quality loss when you edit and save again, but it cannot restore detail already lost.
Why is the PNG file bigger than my JPG?
PNG uses lossless compression, which keeps every pixel exactly. For photos, that usually produces a larger file than JPG.
Does the PNG have a transparent background?
Not automatically. JPG images have no transparency, so the converted PNG keeps the original background.
Can I convert many images at once?
Yes. Add as many JPG files as you need and download all the PNGs together as a ZIP.
