How to make a passport size photo

  1. Take a good photo: face the camera straight on, neutral expression, eyes open, against a plain light wall, in even daylight with no shadows.
  2. Choose the size required by the country or form.
  3. Zoom and drag the photo so your head fits the oval guide — top of the head near the top guide line and chin near the bottom line.
  4. Download a single photo at 300 DPI for online applications, or a print sheet with several copies to print at a photo shop on 4×6 in paper or A4.

Always check the official rules of the passport office or embassy before you apply — requirements are updated from time to time, and photos that do not comply are a common reason for applications being delayed.

Rules that apply almost everywhere

  • Taken within the last 6 months.
  • Plain, light background with no patterns or shadows.
  • Head straight, facing the camera, mouth closed, eyes open and visible.
  • No glasses for many countries (including the USA, UK and India), no hats or head coverings except for religious reasons.
  • No filters, beauty effects or digital alterations.
  • Sharp, in focus, with natural skin colour.

About the background

This tool frames and sizes your photo but does not automatically remove the background. Take the photo against a plain white or light-grey wall so the background already meets the rules. The fill colour you choose is only used if the photo does not cover the whole frame.

Printing your photos

The print sheet is created at 300 DPI. Print it at 100% / actual size — not “fit to page” — on glossy or matte photo paper, then cut along the light grey lines. Most photo shops in Bangladesh and elsewhere print a 4R (4 × 6 in) sheet cheaply. If an online form needs a file under a certain size, run the single photo through Reduce Image Size.

Frequently asked questions

What is passport size in Bangladesh?

The common standard is 35 × 45 mm. Digital forms often ask for 300 × 300 pixels and under 100 KB instead — check the notice you are applying to.

What size is a US passport photo?

2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head measuring 1 to 1⅜ inches from chin to top of head, on a white or off-white background.

Does this tool remove the background?

No. Take the photo against a plain, light-coloured wall. The tool sizes and frames the photo and fills any empty areas with the colour you choose.

How do I print the photos?

Download the print sheet and print it at 100% (actual size) on 4×6 inch photo paper or A4. Then cut along the guide lines.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything is done in your browser.
