How to reduce an image to 100 KB

  1. Add your photo (or several). JPG, PNG and WebP are all accepted.
  2. Set the target size in kilobytes. It is 100 KB by default, but you can type any value — for example 20 KB for a signature or 50 KB for a passport-style photo.
  3. Optionally set a maximum width if the form also specifies dimensions.
  4. Press Process images. Each image is saved as a JPG just under your target size, at the highest quality that fits.

How it finds the right size

File size depends on two things: the number of pixels and the JPG quality. The tool first tries your image at its full size and runs a fast binary search on the quality setting to get as close to your target as possible without going over. If even a low quality is still too large — common with high-resolution phone photos and very small targets — it gradually reduces the dimensions and searches again. The result is the sharpest image that still meets the limit.

Typical size limits on application forms

Form typeCommon photo limitCommon signature limit
Government job applications (e.g. Bangladesh Teletalk portals)Up to 100 KB, often 300 × 300 pxUp to 60 KB, often 300 × 80 px
University admissions50–200 KB20–50 KB
Visa and e-passport formsOften 240 KB or less, with strict dimensions—
Competitive exams (e.g. India SSC/UPSC)20–50 KB10–20 KB

Requirements vary between organisations and change over time, so always follow the exact instructions in the notice you are applying to — especially pixel dimensions, background colour and file type.

Tips for a sharp result under the limit

  • Crop first. Remove empty background around your face or signature before compressing; fewer pixels means higher quality at the same KB.
  • Set the dimensions the form asks for. If a form wants 300 × 300 pixels, resize with our Image Resizer (crop to fill) first, then reduce the size here.
  • Use good light. Grainy photos taken in dim light contain “noise” that is hard to compress, so they lose more quality.
  • Signatures: scan or photograph in black ink on plain white paper. Simple, high-contrast images compress extremely well.
  • Aim slightly under the limit. Some websites measure 1 KB as 1,000 bytes and others as 1,024 bytes. The tool uses 1 KB = 1,024 bytes and stays under the target, but for very strict forms you can set a target a few KB below the limit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce a photo to 100 KB?

Add the photo, keep the target at 100 KB and press Process images. The tool finds the best quality under 100 KB and saves it as a JPG.

Can I reduce to 20 KB or 50 KB?

Yes. Type any target size in KB. For very small targets, the image may also be reduced in dimensions to fit.

Why is the result a JPG?

JPG gives the best quality for a given file size with photos and scans, and it is the format most application forms accept.

My result is 99 KB but the form rejects it. Why?

Some forms count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes. 99 KB here (101,376 bytes) can be over a 100,000-byte limit. Set the target to 95 KB to be safe.

Are my documents uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, so your photo, signature or ID never leaves your device.
