How to edit PDF metadata

  1. Choose your PDF. Its current properties appear in the form.
  2. Edit any field — title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer.
  3. Or press Clear all fields to remove the information completely.
  4. Press Save PDF to download the updated file.

What is PDF metadata?

Every PDF can carry a set of document properties that you do not see on the page. You can view them in most readers under File → Properties. They typically include:

PropertyWhat it contains
TitleThe document’s name — shown in browser tabs and search results instead of the file name
AuthorOften filled automatically with the name of the computer’s user account
Subject / KeywordsDescription and tags used by document-management systems
CreatorThe program the document was written in, e.g. Microsoft Word
ProducerThe software that generated the PDF file
Created / ModifiedDate and time stamps

Why edit or remove it?

  • Privacy. The Author field frequently contains a full name or a company laptop’s user name, and dates reveal when a document was really written. Clear them before sending a CV, a tender or a document to the other side in a negotiation.
  • Professional appearance. A PDF titled “Microsoft Word - Document1” looks careless when it opens in a browser tab. Give it a proper title.
  • SEO for PDFs on your website. Google can show the PDF title in search results. A clear title and subject help people find and click your brochures, menus and reports.
  • Organisation. Keywords and subjects make documents easier to find in archives and document-management systems.

What this tool does not change

Only the standard document-information fields are edited. The visible page content is not changed. Some PDFs also carry an XMP metadata block or hidden data such as comments, attachments or earlier revisions; for highly sensitive documents, consider also printing to a new PDF or using a dedicated sanitising tool.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I see a PDF’s metadata?

In most PDF readers, open File → Properties (or Document Properties). This tool also shows the current values as soon as you choose a file.

Does editing metadata change the pages?

No. Only the hidden document properties change; the pages look exactly the same.

Why does my PDF show my computer user name as the author?

Word processors usually fill the Author field automatically from your account name. Clear or change it here before sharing.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The PDF is read and saved in your browser.
