How to write numbers in words

Type a number — whole, negative or with decimals — and the converter shows it in several formats you can copy with one click: plain words, check-writing style, US currency, uppercase, ordinal (“twenty-first”) and with thousands separators.

How to write a check

On a US check, the amount is written twice: in numbers in the box, and in words on the line below. The words line is the legal amount if the two don’t match. The standard style is the dollar amount in words, then “and”, then the cents as a fraction over 100:

$1,250.75 → One thousand two hundred fifty and 75/100 dollars

  • Start writing at the far left of the line and draw a line through any empty space afterward so nothing can be added.
  • Use “and” only before the cents — not between hundreds and tens.
  • For a whole-dollar amount, write “and 00/100”.

Rules for spelling numbers

  • Hyphenate compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine (forty-two, seventy-six).
  • In American English, “and” is not used inside whole numbers (“one hundred twenty”); in British English it often is (“one hundred and twenty”).
  • Style guides (AP, Chicago) usually spell out numbers one through nine — or one through one hundred — in running text, and use numerals for larger numbers.
  • Always spell out a number that begins a sentence.

Large numbers

This converter uses the short scale used in the US and modern UK: a million is 1,000,000, a billion is 1,000,000,000, a trillion is 10¹² and a quadrillion is 10¹⁵. Numbers up to 999 quadrillion are supported.
