How to use the final grade calculator

  1. Enter your current grade in the class before the final (from your gradebook or the grade calculator).
  2. Enter the grade you want to finish with — for example 90% for an A−.
  3. Enter how much the final exam is worth (its weight in your syllabus).
  4. See the score you need, plus a table for every letter grade. Use “What if” to see where a particular score would leave you.

The formula

Required final score = (Goal − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final’s weight as a decimal.

Example: you have 84%, want 90%, and the final is worth 25%. Required = (90 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 108%. That’s more than 100%, so an A− isn’t possible without extra credit — but a B (80%) needs only (80 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 68%.

Why the final’s weight matters so much

A heavily weighted final (30–50%) can swing your grade a full letter or more in either direction, while a final worth 10% barely moves it. Check the syllabus: some courses also have rules like “you must pass the final to pass the class” that a simple calculation can’t capture.

Study smarter before the final

  • Start with topics that carry the most points or that you understand least.
  • Do practice exams under timed conditions.
  • Sleep well the night before — it matters more than one last late-night cram.
  • Ask your teacher about extra credit or dropped scores if the math looks tough.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

Subtract your current grade times (1 − final weight) from your goal, then divide by the final weight.

What if the result is over 100%?

Your goal can’t be reached with the final alone. Check the table for the best grade still possible, or ask about extra credit.

What if the result is negative?

You’ve already secured that grade — even a zero on the final would keep you there.

Where do I find the final exam weight?

In your course syllabus or grading policy, usually listed as a percentage of the final grade.
