How to calculate your grade

  1. Add a row for each category (homework, quizzes, midterm, project) or for each individual assignment.
  2. Enter the grade you earned as a percentage and the category’s weight from your syllabus.
  3. Your weighted average and letter grade appear instantly. Leave rows blank for work that hasn’t been graded yet.

The weighted grade formula

Weighted grade = (grade₁ × weight₁ + grade₂ × weight₂ + …) ÷ (weight₁ + weight₂ + …)

Example: homework 92% (20%), quizzes 85% (15%), midterm 78% (25%) and project 95% (15%). That’s (92×20 + 85×15 + 78×25 + 95×15) ÷ 75 = 6,490 ÷ 75 = 86.5%, a B. Because only 75% of the course has been graded, the final exam (25%) can still move the grade up or down.

If your teacher uses points instead of percentages, enter each category’s points earned divided by points possible, and use the points possible as the weight.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results, then divide by the total of the weights.

What if the weights don’t add up to 100%?

That’s fine — the calculator divides by the total weight entered, which shows your grade for the work graded so far.

What letter grade is 85%?

On the common US scale, 85% is a B (83–86%).

Can I use points instead of percentages?

Yes. Enter points earned ÷ points possible × 100 as the grade, and the points possible as the weight.
