How to remove EXIF data
- Add your photos. For each one, the tool shows the hidden information it found — such as camera model, date taken and GPS coordinates.
- A cleaned copy is created automatically. Download each one, or all of them together as a ZIP.
- Share the cleaned copies instead of the originals.
What is EXIF data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is information that cameras and phones store inside every photo. It can include:
- GPS location — latitude and longitude accurate to a few metres, if location was enabled for the camera.
- Date and time the photo was taken.
- Device details — phone or camera make and model, and sometimes the serial number.
- Camera settings — exposure, aperture, ISO, focal length.
- Software used to edit the image, and sometimes a thumbnail of the original before editing.
Why remove it?
A photo of your new home, your child’s school uniform or an item you are selling online can reveal exactly where you live through its GPS tags. Large platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp strip location data from images they publish, but many other places do not — email attachments, cloud-shared links, forums, marketplaces, file transfers and messages sent “as document” usually keep the original file with all its metadata.
Removing EXIF is a simple habit that protects your privacy, especially for photos taken at home, and for anyone selling items online.
Lossless cleaning
For JPG and PNG, the tool removes the metadata blocks directly from the file without re-compressing the image, so quality is completely unchanged. If a JPG relies on an orientation tag to display the right way up, it is re-saved at high quality with the rotation applied, so it doesn’t appear sideways after the tag is removed. WebP images are re-saved at high quality.
Turn off location in your camera
- iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → Never. When sharing, tap “Options” and turn off “Location”.
- Android: open the Camera app → Settings → turn off “Location tags” (the name varies by brand).
Frequently asked questions
Does removing EXIF reduce photo quality?
Not for JPG and PNG — metadata is removed without re-compressing the image. WebP files and JPGs that need rotating are re-saved at high quality.
Does Facebook or WhatsApp remove EXIF?
Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp (when sent as a photo) remove most metadata from published images. Email attachments, cloud links and files sent as documents usually keep it.
Can I see the GPS location in my photo?
Yes. If a photo contains GPS coordinates, the tool shows them, with a link to view the spot on a map.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Metadata is read and removed in your browser, so your photos never leave your device.
