How to convert JPG to WebP
- Add your JPG or PNG images — as many as you need.
- Set the quality. 80% gives an excellent balance of size and sharpness for websites.
- Optionally set a maximum width so oversized photos are scaled down at the same time.
- Press Process images and download the .webp files individually or as a ZIP.
Why use WebP on your website?
Images are usually the largest part of a web page. Google’s own studies found WebP lossy images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPGs, and lossless WebP is about 26% smaller than PNG. Smaller images mean:
- Faster loading, especially on mobile data.
- Better Core Web Vitals — particularly Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), which Google uses as a ranking signal.
- Lower bandwidth and hosting costs.
- Higher conversion rates for online shops, where every second of loading time matters.
Tools like Google PageSpeed Insights often recommend “Serve images in next-gen formats” — converting to WebP fixes that warning.
Browser support
WebP is supported by every current major browser: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari (since version 14 on macOS Big Sur and iOS 14). For almost all visitors today you can use WebP directly. If you must support very old devices, use the HTML <picture> element with a JPG fallback.
Using WebP in WordPress, Shopify and others
- WordPress has accepted WebP uploads since version 5.8.
- Shopify automatically serves WebP to supporting browsers, but uploading well-sized images still helps.
- Custom sites: simply reference the .webp file in your
<img>tag.
Transparency
Unlike JPG, WebP supports transparent backgrounds. PNG logos and cut-out product images keep their transparency when converted here, usually at a fraction of the PNG file size.
Note: a few older Safari versions cannot create WebP files in the browser. If that happens, the tool tells you and saves JPG instead — use Chrome, Edge or Firefox for WebP output.
