How to compress a video

  1. Add your video. MP4, MOV from iPhone, WebM and MKV are supported.
  2. Choose how to compress. Balanced suits most videos. Pick Target size and type a number (for example 25 MB for Discord, 16 MB for WhatsApp, 20 MB for Gmail) to hit an exact limit.
  3. Pick a max resolution. 720p looks great on phones and laptops and saves a lot of space compared to 4K.
  4. Press Compress video, watch the progress, then preview and download the MP4.

How much smaller will my video get?

Phone cameras record at very high bitrates — a minute of 4K iPhone video is often 300–400 MB. Re-encoding that at 720p with a sensible bitrate typically produces 15–30 MB per minute, a reduction of 80–95% with little visible difference on a phone screen. The estimate above the button shows the expected output size before you start.

Where you’re sending itSize limitSuggested setting
Discord (free)10 MBTarget size 9 MB, 720p
WhatsApp (as video)16 MB recommendedTarget size 15 MB, 720p
Gmail attachment25 MBTarget size 24 MB
Outlook attachment20 MBTarget size 19 MB

Limits change from time to time, so leave a little headroom. Very long videos can’t be squeezed into tiny sizes without visible blur — for those, trim the video or lower the resolution further.

Fast, private compression in your browser

This compressor uses the WebCodecs video encoder built into modern browsers, usually backed by your device’s hardware. That makes it far faster than older JavaScript compressors, and because everything runs locally, your video is never uploaded. The output is a standard H.264 MP4 that plays on every phone, computer, TV and social network.

Browser support

Works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Opera, Safari (16.4+) and Firefox (130+) on desktop and mobile. Long 4K videos need plenty of memory, so a computer is faster than a phone for big files.

Frequently asked questions

Is the video compressor free?

Yes, free with no watermark and no length limit.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is compressed on your device by your browser’s built-in encoder.

What format is the compressed video?

MP4 with H.264 video — the most widely supported format. Audio is kept (as AAC or the original codec) unless you remove it.

How do I compress a video to exactly 25 MB?

Choose “Target size”, enter 24 (to leave a little headroom) and press Compress. The bitrate is calculated from your video’s length.

Why does it say my browser is not supported?

Video compression needs the WebCodecs API. Update your browser or use Chrome or Edge on a computer.
