How to calculate eBay fees

  1. Enter the item price and any shipping you charge the buyer.
  2. Enter the sales tax rate collected on the order (eBay collects it automatically for most US states). The final value fee is charged on the total amount of the sale, which includes tax.
  3. Pick your category or enter a custom final value fee, plus your Promoted Listings ad rate if the sale came through an ad.
  4. Enter your item cost, the postage you pay and packaging.

What “total amount of the sale” means

eBay calculates the final value fee on the item price + shipping + handling + sales tax the buyer pays. That is why many sellers are surprised to find their fee is higher than 13.6% of the item price alone. This calculator includes the tax so the fee matches your eBay statement.

Example

A $45 item with $6 shipping and 7% sales tax: total sale = (45 + 6) × 1.07 = $54.57. Final value fee = 13.6% × $54.57 = $7.42, plus a $0.40 per-order fee = $7.82 in eBay fees. After a $15 item cost, $5.20 postage and $0.50 packaging, you keep about $22.48 profit.

Ways to reduce eBay fees

  • Open an eBay Store if you sell regularly — the lower final value fee can outweigh the subscription.
  • Maintain Top Rated Seller status for a final-value-fee discount on qualifying listings.
  • Use promoted listings selectively — a 5% ad rate on every sale eats into thin margins.
  • Price shipping realistically. “Free shipping” still means paying the fee on your item price; build postage into the price carefully.

Frequently asked questions

How much does eBay take from a sale in 2026?

For most categories, 13.6% of the total sale (item, shipping and tax) plus $0.30 or $0.40 per order. Store subscribers pay 12.7% in most categories.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total amount the buyer pays, including shipping and sales tax.
